8 Beagles That Made The Bread Famous

The Beagle is a small dog with a strong nose, floppy ears, and a friendly personality. In addition to being talented scenthounds, Beagles also make great companions and family pets.

8. Odie

Odie is the best friend of Jon in Jim Davis’ comic strip Garfield. In the strip, Odie is goofy, overactive, and prone to drooling – he is famous for his long, flapping tongue.

7. The Beagle Boys

A criminal gang of Beagles wearing red shirts are some of the more nefarious members of the Walt Disney family. The Beagle Boys first appeared in 1951 in a ten-page story where they tried to rob Scrooge McDuck and they have been trying to rob him ever since.

6. Him and Her

The former United States President Lyndon Johnson was known for having several dogs but two of his best-known dogs were a pair of Beagles named Him and Her. There are many photographs out there of Johnson walking his Beagles. Unfortunately, both of them met an untimely demise – Her died after swallowing a stone and Him was hit by a car.

Another smart Beagle made famous on television is Brains, the canine companion of Inspector Gadget. Not only was Inspector Gadget a children’s television show for many years but it was also made into two feature-length films.

4. Shiloh

Whether or not you grew up in the 1990s, you are probably familiar with the book, Shiloh. Also made into a film, Shiloh follows the story of the Beagle Shiloh and his relationship with a young boy named Marty Preston. After escaping from an abusive owner, Shiloh found his home with Marty who fights to keep him safe.

3. Gromit

Though it is not widely known, the canine half of the Claymation duo Wallace & Gromit is a Beagle. Not only is Gromit one of the most recognizable dog characters but he is also one of the most accomplished, holding a degree from Dogwarts University with a major in Engineering. He also reads the paper, cooks, and plays chess.

2. Bagel

Barry Manilow, American singer-songwriter, owned a Beagle named Bagel. Not only is Bagel famous for her celebrity owner, but she was actually featured on the back album cover for Manilow’s triple platinum record Tryin’ to Get The Feeling. When Bagel had a litter of puppies, one of them was gifted to Marie Osmond on her 18th birthday, as seen on the Donnie and Marie Show.

Although Snoopy isn’t a real dog, he is certainly one of the most (if not THE most) famous dogs on television and he is a Beagle! Snoopy first appeared in a comic strip created by Charles M. Schultz but he eventually made his way onto the big screen with the rest of the Peanuts gang.
